New Day Collaboration
Track Creation
May 2021
Idea
I created this track in logic using loops and logic drummer defining each section and creating a step up to the chorus. Once I had a scratch instrumental I created a topline melody and some lyrical ideas.
I then asked Matt to create a guitar track and he and his brother Dom created an amazing set of bass and guitar tracks for me to use which made the song come alive.
Collaboration:
Matt and Dom Buckland

For New Day, Debbie gave us her vocal to a logic loop chord progression and some drums. We didn't want to drastically alter the harmony of the track so we went to work making the basic loop much more interesting with a heavy focus on accentuating the dynamics of the song. In the verse we used Dom's fretless bass ability to give the track a soft round bass part almost akin to a double bass while I sought to weave some guitar ear candy in and around Debbie's vocals with a subtle tremolo in the left ear and some harmonics in the right. We thought the chorus really needed a big dynamic lift so a lightly driven guitar lead line seeks to lift and compliment the vocal and the acoustic layers really kick up the volume to lift the track without need for automation.
Lyrics and Structure
The phrase 'new day' appeared and I knew that was the theme. It took a while for me to identify the full lyric but knew I wanted to keep it simple. I had the feeling of trying to climb into a new and better world and know it is not going to be easy. The lyric is really about hope for a future we need to change for our children.
The song form is a simple verse/chorus structure and middle 8.
Instrumentals
The layers of guitar and bass are completed and I will be re-recording the vocals with my new Aston Spirit microphone. The melodic horn sound will be replaced with a real instrument such as a flute or clarinet. People are split regarding this feature but I feel it gives the song a different quality and also suggests the sun rising.
Next Steps
Once the vocals are recorded I shall secure recordings for the horn motif and work with Matt on the mix.
